The Days are Getting Shorter, but the Fun Doesn’t Stop. Riding in the Dark Adds an Extra Thrill!

It’s that time of year: there is a chill in the air, the days are getting shorter, and most importantly of all, the mountain coaster in Gatlinburg is still running! Whoever said you can’t ride a roller coaster when it’s cool or dark? As the sun goes down, the fun is just getting started here at the Gatlinburg Mountain Coaster.

Dark Doesn’t Slow Us Down

While many of the attractions in Gatlinburg close up early this time of year (if they’re even open at all) our mountain coaster is open all year round. We don’t let things like the rain, the snow, and the dark slow us down. How can we run our coaster in the dark? The track is lined with thousands of twinkling lights from the top all the way to the bottom.

Our coaster has one more advantage that you won’t find with other traditional coasters in Tennessee. Our cars have brakes. Yep! That’s right; we let you control the speed at which you go down the side of the mountain. You can start out slow and enjoy the silent ride as the twinkling lights cast just enough light around the track to bring the edge of the forest to life. You never know who you might see on your way down.

You might catch a glimpse of Mrs. Bear and her cubs, the raccoon family, the occasional deer, or a few rabbits. You see, our local neighbors don’t mind you visiting them at night, and the small amount of light might be just enough for you to take a few pictures along your way down. You can, of course, stop your car on the way down as a way to ensure you get better pictures than you would while moving.

Turn Up the Speed

Just as much as you can slow down, stop, and take your time riding our mountain coaster, you can also let your car run at full speed (up to 35 miles per hour). When you give the car its head at night, the twinkling lights turn into a virtual tunnel of light. You get to decide how you want to ride.

More importantly, this mountain coaster in Gatlinburg lets you take your kids along for the ride thanks to our two-seat (fore and aft) cars. The cars have full safety harnesses to ensure no one falls out, and since you get to control the speed, this is a fantastic way to introduce your kids to riding a mountain coaster.

One final thought about riding the mountain coaster in Gatlinburg after the sun goes down: if you buy a regular daylight ride ticket, you have the option to buy a second ticket for your night ride at a significantly reduced price. So, what are you waiting for? Bring your significant other for a romantic nighttime ride or grab the kids and come for a daylight ride, then stay for a night ride! The coaster is open all year round, and no matter what the weather is like, you can enjoy a ride down the mountainside when the sun goes down.
