It’s that time of year in the Great Smoky Mountains: the air is getting cooler and crisper, and the trees are putting on their magnificent fall best. Where better to enjoy this fabulous annual show of oranges, yellows, browns, coppers, and reds than from the top of a mountain? How about from the seat of our mountain coaster as you slide down the side of the mountain?
Colors on the Move
Starting in September, the leaves in the upper elevations (6,000 feet and up) start to turn. By October, everything from 4,000 feet up is turning into a magical golden carpet. This is the perfect time to ride the mountain coaster in Gatlinburg. Unlike most of the other coasters in the state, the Gatlinburg Mountain Coaster doesn’t close just because the weather is getting colder. We want you to be able to enjoy the spectacular views we live with every day while having the time of your life.
This mountain coaster is like no other roller coaster you have ever ridden on. The average coaster starts out at ground level. On the way to the top of the first drop, you have to put up with the clattering of the chain drive and locking mechanisms, just to go screaming to the bottom again. While this is fun to be sure, you really don’t get to see anything on the way down. Imagine going past the glorious Tennessee mountainside so fast you can’t take in all the beauty; instead, you miss everything. Doesn’t sound like so much fun, after all, does it?
A New Way to See the Fall Foliage
What if we told you that you could ride the mountain coaster in Gatlinburg down the mountainside at your own pace? Each of the single and two-seat cars on our mountain coaster is equipped with a handbrake. You can use this to take a slow ride down the tracks and enjoy the splendor of our fall foliage, or you can fly down it at speeds of up to 35 miles per hour. The choice is yours to make, you can go as fast or as slow as you want.
The cars run virtually silently as there are no lift chains or air cylinder operated brakes; just you, the car, and the sound of the wind blowing through your hair. Our coaster is so quiet that you might even catch a glimpse of one or two of our native animal inhabitants hanging out on the edge of the woods.
Seeing the fall foliage from this mountain coaster in Gatlinburg during the daylight is only one part of the excitement. When you pay full price for a day ride, you can purchase a second ticket for a night ride for a steeply discounted price. At night we turn on thousands of tiny lights running the length of the track. This is the perfect time to fly down the track at warp speed. The speed turns the lights into a constant stream of light akin to riding in a lighted tunnel. Riding the Gatlinburg Mountain Coaster is one of the best ways to see how beautiful the Smoky Mountains are at this time of year.
